Since Elon Musk acquired Twitter, both have been in the news for the massive tosses and turns following the event. You open the social media, and all you see is the takeover of Twitter by Space X and Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
Now, among all the fuss, a short video has gone viral. Late last month, two men stood outside of Twitter HQ pretending to be recently laid-off employees carrying cardboard boxes.
But the world soon found out that these two dudes were just trolls looking to pull a prank, and neither of them had any distant relation to being a Twitter employee.
When interviewed by a CNBC reporter, they said they were “Rahul Ligma” and “Daniel Johnson.”
The news quickly spread online as some were baffled, but a lot of them celebrated their successful prank.
What is Ligma?
“Ligma” is an internet hoax for “lick my balls,” and many popular ‘ligma’ memes have emerged. Despite that, multiple outlets, including Bloomberg and CNBC, decided to run headlines on Friday saying that Twitter employees were getting laid off and were leaving the building carrying boxes.
As the story trended, the current CEO of Twitter got into the fun, tweeting, “Ligma Johnson had it coming.”
Elon Musk ‘Rehires’ the Two
Elon Musk seems to be enjoying the incident and has taken the joke a step further by claiming he has decided to rehire the two.
On Wednesday, Musk shared a photo with the two and wrote:
“Welcoming back Ligma & Johnson!” In a comment, he added, “Important to admit when I’m wrong & firing them was truly one of my biggest mistakes.”
Musk fired many of Twitter’s top execs Thursday evening and has signaled that he will lay off employees. But Ligma is not one of them. A spokesperson for Twitter didn’t respond to a request for comment.
Musk has been in the headlines for quite some time as he is making major layoffs and structural changes to Twitter.
The CEO has also been very active, sharing news about the changes and informing users regarding their confusion about Twitter and its services.
On a more serious note, Musk fired a Twitter engineer on Tuesday in public as the employee chose to reply to Musk in order to ‘debunk’ facts.
MSN did a little digging as to who these two were and the backstory of the prank.
In the words of Rahul Ligma:
“I work out every morning at the gym that is in the same building as the Twitter HQ. Saw a bunch of cameras outside that morning while walking in and thought that it was just kinda crazy that these people were outside waiting desperately for some action to happen. So middle of my workout, I thought it would be really funny if I walked out with a box and they fell for it. So I texted a friend and asked him to pull up with a box. he pulled up with two, and we just walked out, and they fell for it.”
To cash on the original story going viral, Ligma has done a little more trolling and has posted a video as a laid-off FTX worker.
Presumably, before or after taking the photo with Musk, Ligma posted a photo from inside the Twitter HQ bathroom. Among all these twists and turns involving Twitter, Rahul Ligma seems to be having fun and living his best life.
